Institutions are very important to any scene in any given place. In the early days most places would have a resident dj who would be the taste maker & selector week in & week out. Dj’s like Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, & Larry Levan would go on to help create institutions like The Warehouse, The Music Box & Paradise Garage. Given today’s current situation it is a rare thing to have those kind of institutions, but one place that has been around for 30 years now is Smartbar. And the night that intends to keep those important values alive is Hugo Ball. Not looking to follow any trends or shine the spotlight on any one person, they keep things down to the pure fundamentals of a good party. They all put in a lot into the night by getting there early to decorate & transform the venue to make for a unique experience each month. This weekend see’s this night have its 1 yr anniversary by celebrating with its residents Nathan Drew Larsen, Samone, Sevron, Marlon Montez, & long time resident Justin Long all night long. Can’t say enough how important it is to support these nights to keep them going and from stopping it falling into the wrong hands. Below we have shared a mix that residents Samone & Nathan Drew Larsen put together in homage of the party. Enjoy and we hope to see you at the madness…
Haven’t been able to make a post in here recently due to personal reasons, but wanted to take time out to congratulate Marea Stamper for her new position as Smartbar’s talent buyer! Couldn’t be more excited about the future given her knowledge & taste for good music. We know she already has some pretty exciting things in the works, so be on the look out! Also wanna congratulate Jason Garden as Smartbar’s assistant as well, couldn’t think of a better team to take over for Nate… Hear is to the future!
Seeing that this weekend is part of record store day, we thought we should share some good news with you. Chicago & Gramaphones very own Garrett David has just put out a lovely record on Stripped & Chewed in homage to his residency at Queen!, which is held @ Smartbar every Sunday along side Derrick Carter & Michael Serafini. 4 nice house cuts that should not be slept on, and while your at it look into past releases from this up & coming Chicago label cause they are all great!
You can grab this record with ltd. jacket & release exclusively now only @ Gramaphone Records or at their webstore here:
We just missed out on the record release party last night @ Gramaphone, but no worries there will be another @ Queen! in a couple of weeks. You can also catch Garrett every Sunday @ Queen! & tomorrow @ Gramaphone for the all day event with lots of other great Chicago players… Support the artist, buy vinyl!
We got a big weekend coming up here in Chicago, so just wanted to show you what you should be doing if your here. This weekend could prove to be a special one if you play your cards right, something every single night! First up on Friday we have the return of Sprung by MiM featuring Superlounge & Phillip Stone… Party will be @ a small, intimate, yet undisclosed location. Should be special with extended sets from both parties! Pre-sales are over, but you can get in @ the door still. Info on facebook event page.
And next on Saturday we have our favorite monthly party Hugo Ball! This time featuring Steven Tang with of course Justin Long & Marlon Montez for support. Think this one should be special, but then again they all are! Get there early and show some love! Smartbar of course, you know the drill…
And last but not least, the Tied fellas are back again this time with a wonderful, much needed day party featuring Giles Smith of Two Armadillos. Dan Wagner, Nathan Drew Larsen, & the Tied boys for support. This will be a great end to the weekend, unless your up for Queen…
So its very important to us to support our local dj’s & parties here in Chicago, its just good for the scene… And one of our favorites is the Changes party @ Beauty Bar which is thrown by some our favorite locals as well: Samone & Nathan Drew Larson. Tonight its goin down so get over and support!!! Samone & Studio Casual are holding it down all night… Same drill, free party & free shot @ midnight! Here is a set from the main man Spector @ Changes 1 Year Anniversary to show u how it goes down, enjoy!
So now onto our last of the 3’s, where everything comes together… the parties! You will see a lot about these parties featured here, they are our favorite promoters doing these events @ our favorite spots.
1: First and formost would like to wish Changes, hosted by Samone & Nathan Drew Larson, a happy 1 year anniversary for their monthly party! Indeed a favorite of ours. Held @ Beauty Bar first friday of every month w/ great headliners and local talent. Free party, great music, and always a free shot @ midnight!!! Can’t argue with that… So the next 1 is to be held on April 5th w/ Samone headlining with support from Studio Casual!
2: And next up is our other favorite monthly party HUGO BALL!!! This party has a major influence on us here & holds a similar mentality to what we stand for… Justin Long has been a Smartbar resident for many years now and this is his new endeavor that has seen the likes of Norm Talley, Kyle Hall, Mike Huckaby, and many others grace the decks. Vinyl only or live just how we like it! Next up this month is L.I.E.S. label boss Ron Morelli & Bookworms (Live) putting it down, don’t miss it!
3: And last on the list is our good friends with the Tied collective. They hold down the underground side of things bringing in artists from all over in different intimate venues all over Chicago. They’ve hosted Karina from Zoo Project, Cesare Vs. Disorder, Franklin DeCosta & now they have Bass Culture boss D’julz coming to town this month. Keep a look out for these guys & don’t miss out!
See you on the dancefloor!
